10 Years of Affiliate Marketing: What Actually Works.

Post by Peter Hanley bizbitspro.com

Ten years ago, I started my affiliate marketing journey with enthusiasm, unrealistic expectations, and absolutely no clue what I was doing. I tried everything – every social media platform, every traffic source, every “proven” strategy the gurus were selling.

Most of it was a waste of time and money.

Today, with a decade of real-world experience behind me, I can tell you exactly what works. Not what sounds exciting in a sales letter, but what actually generates consistent income month after month.

The answer might surprise you: It’s not about doing more. It’s about doing less, but doing it better.

The Shiny Object Syndrome Years

Like most beginners, I suffered from chronic FOMO. If YouTube was working for someone, I had to try YouTube. When Instagram was hot, I needed an Instagram strategy. If TikTok was the “next big thing,” I was creating TikTok content.

I was everywhere and nowhere at the same time.

My content was scattered across platforms I didn’t understand, promoting products I hadn’t properly tested, to audiences that didn’t know who I was or why they should listen to me.

The wake-up call: After two years of this scattered approach, I was working 60+ hours a week and barely making enough to cover my tools and hosting costs.

Something had to change.

The Focus Revolution

The breakthrough came when I stopped asking “What else can I try?” and started asking “What’s actually working?”

When I analyzed my modest successes, three clear patterns emerged:

  1. My best conversions came from blog posts, not social media
  2. My Facebook posts generated more engagement than all other platforms combined
  3. My email subscribers bought more than my social media followers

So I made a radical decision: I would focus on just three channels.

Channel #1: Blogging – The Foundation That Never Fails

Why blogging became my core:

After trying every traffic source imaginable, blogging consistently delivered the highest quality visitors. People who find you through search are actively looking for solutions. They’re not scrolling mindlessly – they’re researching with intent to buy.

The compound effect: Blog posts work 24/7 for years. A post I wrote in 2018 still brings me affiliate commissions today. Compare that to social media posts that disappear into the void after 24 hours.

The AI advantage: The arrival of AI has transformed blogging from a time-consuming grind to an efficient system. What used to take me 4 hours to research and write now takes 1 hour with AI assistance. Better content, faster creation, same authentic voice.

But here’s the key: I don’t let AI write for me – I let it help me write better. My experiences, insights, and personality still drive every post.

Channel #2: Facebook – Where the Biggest Market Lives

Why Facebook over everything else:

Simple math – Facebook has the largest, most engaged user base for my demographic. While others chase the newest platforms, I focus where my ideal customers actually spend their time.

The relationship factor: Facebook’s algorithm rewards genuine engagement and relationship-building over promotional posts. This perfectly aligns with my approach of building trust before selling.

The targeting precision: Facebook’s targeting capabilities let me reach exactly the people most likely to be interested in my three core programs. I can find people interested in affiliate marketing, online business, and digital marketing with surgical precision.

One platform mastery: Instead of being mediocre on five platforms, I became excellent on one. I understand Facebook’s algorithm, posting schedules, content preferences, and audience behavior intimately.

Channel #3: Email Marketing – The Consistent Income Generator

Why email remains king:

Social media platforms can change their algorithms overnight and kill your reach. Google can update their search algorithm and tank your traffic. But your email list? That’s yours forever.

The consistency principle: I send emails consistently, not just when I’m launching something. This keeps me top-of-mind and builds genuine relationships over time.

The AI writing boost: AI has dramatically improved my email writing speed and quality. I can craft more compelling subject lines, test different approaches quickly, and maintain consistent communication without burning out.

The personal touch: Email allows for deeper, more personal communication than any other channel. My subscribers get to know the real me, not just my public content persona.

The Three-Product Strategy (Revisited)

Focusing on three channels naturally supported my three-product approach:

Wealthy Affiliate – promoted primarily through blog content and detailed email sequences GotBackup – perfect for Facebook’s relationship-based environment
Michael Cheney – ideal for my most engaged email subscribers ready for advanced training

Each channel supports each product naturally, without forcing square pegs into round holes.

What I Learned About AI Integration

The arrival of AI has been a game-changer, but not in the way most people think.

AI doesn’t replace experience – it amplifies it. The same fundamentals that worked pre-AI still work today:

  • Build genuine relationships
  • Solve real problems
  • Maintain consistent presence
  • Focus on quality over quantity

What AI does brilliantly:

  • Speeds up research and content creation
  • Helps optimize headlines and subject lines
  • Assists with technical implementation
  • Reduces time spent on repetitive tasks

What AI can’t do:

  • Replace authentic personal stories
  • Build genuine trust and relationships
  • Make strategic business decisions
  • Create original insights from experience

The Time Freedom Paradox

Here’s what nobody tells you: Success in affiliate marketing isn’t about working more hours – it’s about working the right hours on the right things.

My current weekly schedule:

  • Monday-Wednesday: Content creation (blogs, emails, Facebook posts)
  • Thursday-Friday: Relationship building and community engagement
  • Weekends: Off (mostly)

Total focused work time: 20-25 hours per week. Income: Higher than when I was working 60+ hour weeks scattered across everything.

The Mistakes That Cost Me Years

Chasing every platform: Wasted 18 months trying to “crack” Instagram and YouTube when my audience was primarily on Facebook.

Promoting too many products: Confused my audience and diluted my authority by promoting everything with a decent commission rate.

Inconsistent email marketing: Went months without emailing, then sent promotional blasts. Killed my engagement and deliverability.

Focusing on tactics over strategy: Spent years learning “growth hacks” instead of mastering fundamentals.

What Actually Works: The Simple Formula

After 10 years and countless experiments, here’s what consistently generates income:

Pick three channels. Master them. Pick three products. Know them intimately. Show up consistently. Build relationships before making offers. Use AI to amplify, not replace, your authentic voice.

That’s it. No complex funnels, no secret psychological triggers, no expensive software suites.

The AI-Enhanced Future

Looking forward, AI will make the fundamentals even more important, not less. As everyone gains access to AI writing and content creation, authentic experience and genuine relationships become more valuable, not less.

The competitive advantage won’t be who has the best AI tools – it’ll be who combines AI efficiency with authentic relationship building and strategic focus.

The Bottom Line for Anyone Starting Today

If I were starting affiliate marketing today with everything I know now, here’s exactly what I’d do:

  1. Choose one blog niche and become the go-to expert
  2. Pick one social media platform where my audience actually lives
  3. Build an email list from day one and email consistently
  4. Select maximum three products to promote and use them personally
  5. Use AI to amplify efficiency while maintaining authentic voice

The rest is just distraction.

Your Next Move

Whether you’re just starting or you’ve been spinning your wheels like I did for years, the solution is the same: Stop trying to do everything and start mastering something.

Pick your three channels. Pick your products. Show up consistently.

The money follows focus, not frenzy.

AI gives you the tools. Experience gives you the wisdom. But focus? That’s what actually pays the bills.

I could not do a post without a bit of self promotion.
I try and get my logo out ( made at Wealthy affiliate)
as often as possible to prove I am real and not a current clone

10 years in. Still learning. Still growing. But finally working smarter, not harder.
